Poetry is a literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity through the use of a distinctive style and rhythm; poetry collectively or as a genre of literature.

You might also say that it is a type of literature or fiction writing that attempts to stir the reader’s imagination or emotions.

This is achievable when the writer carefully chooses and selects language according to its meaning, sound, and rhythm. Some poems, such as nursery rhymes, are simple and humorous.
