Short Fiction 1992 – 1999

We Traverse Afar

The second collaboration between Powers and Blaylock, We Traverse Afar appeared in an anthology of specially commissioned Christmas stories entitled Christmas Forever. Edited by David G. Hartwell, Christmas Forever was published in hard cover by Tor in 1993. The issue price was $24.95 and the ISBN 0-312-85575-1. An uncorrected proof copy was also produced, but interestingly this anthology – which also contained original stories by Roger Zelazny, Damon Knight, Gene Wolfe and many others – was never issued in any mass market edition. You find copies of this release available at ABE.

We Traverse Afar has been reprinted in the Subterranean Night Moves collection and in Strange Itineraries. It was also included in the Blaylock collection, Thirteen Phantasms.

Where They are Hid

This Powers story was published in 1995 by Joe Stefko's Charnel House. It is a beautifully produced and highly collectable book.

The Charnel House edition of Where They are Hid contained original illustrations by Powers, was signed by him and was issued in two states, thus….

  • 350 individually numbered hard cover copies issued in a slip case. These were hand bound in blue Japanese silk. Originally priced at $85.00, this edition carried the ISBN 0-927389-11-8.
  • A further 26 copies were produced, also slip cased. These were hand bound in leather and are a truly beautiful example of the book maker's art. The issue price was $600.00, ISBN 0-921389-10-X. Further information and photographs of this edition can be found at the Charnel House web site.

Copies of this edition do come up for sale fairly frequently – try this link to ABE to see what is currently on offer.

Where They are Hid has twice been published in Germany. It appeared first in the con book for the 2004 Elstercon convention held in Leipzig. Powers had been due to attend this convention as GOH but in the event was unable to travel. The story translated by Andreas Deisel and entitled Wo sie Lauern also appeared in issue two of Omen, a magazine published and edited by Frank Festa, whose Festa Verlag company had previously published the German edition of Declare.

Where They are Hid was reprinted in the Subterranean Night Moves collection and Strange Itineraries.

Itinerary

This Powers story was commissioned for an anthology put together by writer and editor Al Sarrantonio. First published as a limited edition by Cemetery Dance in 1999, this collection entitled 999 featured all new stories from an extraordinary selection of A list genre writers, including Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, William Peter Blatty, Joyce Carol Oates, David Morrell, Kim Newman, Thomas M. Disch, Michael Marshall Smith… and the list goes on!

This Cemetery Dance edition was issued in two limited states. An oversized leather-bound, gilt-stamped volume issued in a slip case, there were 500 numbered copies in brown priced at $125.00 and fifty two lettered copies in red that were priced at $350. All copies were signed by all the contributors except for Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates.

The trade hard cover edition of 999 was published by Avon (priced $27.50, ISBN 0-380-99740-0) in the US shortly after the limited edition appeared. A British hard cover edition appeared soon after that, published by Hodder & Stoughton (£17.99, ISBN 0-340-74859-1) and the anthology subsequently appeared in a number of translations – German, Italian, Russian, French, Japanese and Polish.
