Blog supremo Joe Gordon has dropped us a line to say that the Edinburgh SF Book Group will be looking at Powers's seminal 1983 novel The Anubis Gates as the next book of choice for their discussions.

Joe says "...we’re going to meet on Tuesday 18th, from 6pm in Henderson’s (very nice veggie/wholefood bistro) on Hanover Street in Edinburgh’s New Town," so if you're in the area make sure you're there.

New Ltd On Stranger Tides Officially Announced

Further to my previous entry, Subterranean Press have now officially announced their forthcoming limited edition of Powers's pirate book, On Stranger Tides published twenty years ago this very month.

Scheduled for release in April 2008, the SubPress edition (ISBN 9781596061675) is due to be issued in three separate states - a trade hard cover priced at $18.95, "250 signed numbered hard covers, bound in a premium cloth and a different dust jacket design, with an exclusive portfolio section of piratical illustrations by Powers," and 26 leather-bound tray-cased, lettered copies, which will include one further drawing not included in the limited. The two signed states are priced at $75.00 and $250.00 respectively.

You can pre-order the trade edition via this link to Amazon.com - you'll be helping this site in the process.

More News from Subterrenean

The Subterranean Press web site has recently carried news of two new Powers projects they have in the pipeline.

A new edition of On Stranger Tides is to be published - described as an "...limited and ultra-affordable trade hard cover edition." This is set to be limited to 250 numbered and 26 lettered copies signed by Powers, plus an unsigned trade edition. On Stranger Tides has only recently been reissued by Babbage Press, and, of course, previously appeared as a signed limited edition from Ultramarine Press back in the eighties. However, this new Subterranean edition is certain to eclipse that previous limited state, which was notorious for using the poor quality printed pages from the original Ace edition.

Also announced is a new limited set of the three books in Powers's Fisher King Trilogy - sometimes known as the Last Call Trilogy or the California Trilogy. Comprising Last Call, Expiration Date and Earthquake Weather, Subterranean will be issuing the three novels together, as a matching limited set (of 1000 numbered and 26 lettered), with artwork by J.K. Potter. Though Last Call has previously been published as a limited edition by Charnel House - indeed, undoubtedly the most beautiful and lavish limited edition of any Powers book to date - the two other novels have never been released thus. Additionally, due to corporate complications Expiration Date and Earthquake Weather ended being published by a different company than Last Call, making a mismatched mish-mash of collector's book shelves. I applaud both Powers and Subterranean for seeking to put this right and, frankly can't wait to get hold of a set!

Further details, including news of any other contributors, on both these exciting projects will follow when I can gather more information.

Subterranean Makes Changes to Pilot Light

Subterranean Press have announced a late change to their forthcoming edition of the Ashbless story Pilot Light.

According to their web site, the book was apparently too slim - below the 64 page limit required by SubPress's printer. To bring the piece up to the required page count, Subterranean are to include the original Ashbless interview - previously destined only to appear in the 250 signed limited copies - in all copies of their trade edition too. This is good news for most Powers/Blaylock/Ashbless fans who will, I am sure, be glad to get the chance to see this piece, but those collectors who paid extra for the more expensive, limited edition thinking they were getting an exclusive, might well feel out of sorts. The Subterranean announcement adds "The limited edition will still be the only signed edition of this book."

You can order a copy of the trade edition via this direct link to Amazon.com.

Czech On Stranger Tides Published

Martin Šust, editor at Laser Books in the Czech Republic has kindly sent in this image of the cover of his brand new Czech edition of On Stranger Tides, which as you can see, uses James Gurney's original cover art from the 1987 Ace first edition.

This new edition, the first appearance of this novel in the Czech Republic will be released on Monday 29th of October. A small format paperback edition, the Czech title is Plout na vlnách podivna, the translation by Jiří Engliš and it will be priced at 249 Kč. Not sure about the ISBN for now, but I've got a copy on the way (thanks Martin!) and will add all the details to the On Stranger Tides page in due course.
Martin also hinted of a possible Czech edition of The Stress of Her Regard being in the pipeline and confirmed that there is deal on the table with another Czech publishing house, Triton (anyone know of a web site for them?) for a forthcoming Czech translation of Three Days to Never.

Ironically there look to be far more Powers books in print over there in Czech Republic than there are here in the UK! Publishers take note.

New Version of This Site Goes Live

Welcome to the new and very much improved Works of Tim Powers! The site has had a complete overhaul, with everything being moved over to a WordPress format - one helluva job, let me tell you! Not only does this offer a much cleaner and more professional site for you to browse through, but it also makes managing it about a million times easier than the previous version.

I've taken the opportunity to check all the site's links and to bring everything bang up to date - apart from the Related Articles and Interviews page, which I'm still working on. There are some new features too - not least a Powers Artwork Gallery to which visitors, if they'd like to, can contribute any Powers drawings of their own. Also new is a lengthy article I've written updating you on my Secret Histories project, forthcoming from PS Publishing.

Given that the old site has creaked along for nine years, using code written in notepad for the most part, it's amazing that I got away with it for so long! I'll miss some of the cool themed pages, but I'm also happy to sacrifice them in order to be able to update this new site in mere minutes rather than the palaver that it used to be - which would, of course, explain the frequency of those updates - one every 18 months, on average! That said, I'd be surprised if there weren't any teething problems, so if you spot an error or a broken link, do please email me at webkeep {at} theworksoftimpowers {dot} com. And, of course, you can leave comments in response to any post on this front page section.

Huge thanks to Ariel - web supremo extraordinaire and he of UK SF Book News, and also to my good friend and faithful Igor, Herr Dirk Berger - both of whom have steered me right on this update project.

And thanks also to all those who have supported and visited this site since it was created back in 1998. Here's to another nine years, at least.

Patrick Rothfuss Vents his Spleen in Support of Powers

Patrick Rothfuss, author of the recently published and much acclaimed The Name of the Wind was interviewed back in June on OF Blog of the Fallen and in response to the question asking him to list five authors who in his opinion are "criminally neglected", he listed Powers right at the top saying...

"People who take their fantasy seriously know who he is. But when I walk into a bookstore and they don't have a single one of his books on the shelf, I'm pissed. He doesn't get the attention he deserves."

Hear, hear, Pat! Here's the link to the whole interview.
